JAPANESE SWORDSMANSHIP
Iaijutsu & Kenjutsu. Japanese Swordsmanship etiquette. Students use Saya/ Bokken (wooden sword & sheath), option to use Iaito (non live blade) & Shinken (live blade) is optional & upon discretion of the Sensei (teacher). Students may wear their Tugra Shan karate uniforms or as an option may wear dogi, hakkama & Sword Obi. Techniques taught are Cuts, Blocks, Stances, Kata, Kumitachi (2 person techniques), some suburi (stengthening exercises),
Basic Japanese Swordsmanship terminology.

We want to personally congratulate you on joining Tugra Shan Martial Arts.
We feel this is one of the best & most important decisions you have made. It will be a fascinating & exciting journey. Martial Arts is a long term study. It takes time to learn, time for your body/ & mind to adjust to new movements, to become familiar with the curriculum, to become comfortable with teachers & students, to make new friends. Don’t worry we all started just like you, and slowly over time we all improved. Be patient with yourself, give yourself time, and make a Long Term Commitment - for that is how you will make progress.
We have your best interests at heart, we want you to succeed, we want you to remain a Tugra Shan Martial Arts student for many years.


Suggestions to make your martial arts journey more enjoyable

Please address teachers as sensei (Japanese for teacher)
Treat teachers & fellow students with respect - treat all people as you would like to be treated yourself
Personal hygienne is very important in any martial arts classes
Keep finger & toe nails short to prevent injuries to yourself & others
Every effort should be made to arrive at least 10 minutes prior to class starting
Uniforms should be washed & ironed. Protective gear such as mitts/ shinpads should be regularly washed
All items of jewellery should be removed prior to training to prevent injuries to oneself & others
Training weapons must be enclosed in carry bags  while travelling to & from class by law
Try your best to concentrate & learn
Treat your training partners with respect
Have an attitude of enjoying learning & have fun practising the lessons
Incorporate a Habit of taking & keeping notes on lessons learnt
This will assist you in memorising & reinforcing techniques taught
